England’s capital city
London is England’s capital city and its cultural and economic centre. Situated in the south east of the British Isles on the River Thames, the city has the largest city population in the European Union.
Global city and important financial centre
The city has a high concentration of museums, theatres, universities and polytechnics. Trafalgar Square counts as the centre of the city. Nelson’s Column, built in1842, can be seen here and is one of the most important sights the British erected to mark Admiral Nelson’s victory over the French in the Battle of Trafalgar. Downing Street is also located in the city centre. The British Prime Minister resides behind the door of house number 10.
Shopping in the largest department stores in the world
London is a shopping paradise with more than 30,000 stores. The clothing stores and department stores such as Hamleys and Selfridges are amongst the more famous ones. Various branches tend to concentrate on individual quarters in the city such as the fashion shops on King’s Road.
