Cologne

Cologne - Overview

As the largest city in the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia and the fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne looks back on a 2000 year history that began with the Romans. The city has long been one of the most important trading locations in the Federal Republic. Cologne is also known for its multifaceted nightlife and the Cologne Carnival.

One of the most important cultural cities in Germany

Cologne has much to offer visitors from a cultural point of view: many important church buildings were built in the middle ages. Cologne Cathedral for example is the largest Gothic church throughout northern Europe. This is where the relics of the three kings are said to be kept, which is why the city has three crowns on its coat of arms. On the left bank of the Rhine, the city has two large green belts including the water terraces of the botanical garden and the Volksgarten to the south of the city.
